Sewing for Hope caught fire Sunday night.

When you wake up to messages from across the ocean, your first thought is that something is wrong. This time it was.

Sewing for Hope, our partner in Kampala, Uganda, caught fire Sunday night. For those of you who have followed us from early on, you know this program is part of Refugee and Hope, an organization supporting refugees and displaced people that we have partnered with since nearly the beginning of Threads by Nomad. You may have taken one of our trips there. You may have purchased pants, a stole, a jumpsuit, or a skirt. You may have helped us buy a sewing machine. These women have been part of your story too.

We got on a Zoom call with Elizabeth and Joanne. After a moment of greetings, they turned the camera to show us what remained. They lost everything: merchandise, patterns, equipment. We cried. We prayed. Then we started figuring out what comes next.

We do not have a full plan yet. The property owners and insurance adjusters are working through it. We have an inventory of what was lost and we are in close contact. Here is what we know right now and what you can do:

  1. If you pray, pray for Elizabeth, Joanne, and the women of Sewing for Hope. And whether you pray or not, leave a word of encouragement in the comments of our social media posts. They will see it.

  2. Watch for updates. We will keep you informed as the path forward takes shape.

  3. An Amazon wish list is coming. Once we have a clear picture of what needs to be purchased stateside, we will send it out.

  4. You can shop now. We just received new stoles and jackets, which will be on the website shortly. Pants and a few skirts are available today at threadsbynomad.com.

Thank you for the support that has already come in over the last few hours. It has meant a lot to all of us.
