Book Review Archives

I can't quite put into the words the effect that Tom Wright has had upon my life. He along with men like Dallas Willard and Richard Foster, have helped reshape my thinking in ways I would not have believed possible just 10 years ago. But it is without a doubt Bishop Wright who has re-envisaged me into a life in the kingdom that is here and now, not at the end of time with a theology that has reshaped my eschatology and my entire world-view.

Rarely do you find a man with the gifting to write the deepest and most thought provoking theology who can then turn around and communitcate so accessibly as Tom Wright. The Crown and The Fire - Meditations on the Cross and the Life of the Spirit is a wonderful book. Every chapter encouraged and enlivened my faith and my practice. These thirteen short devotional chapters captured my imagination and left me in awe of the plan and story of our God. This is highly recommended. In fact I'd give it five lips. (you don't wanna know)

Mark Feliciano

I can't tell you how refreshing I found this book. I have read quite a few books pertaining to spiritual formation and Christian disciplines, and this is by far my favorite. The authors writing style is simple, casual, yet full of awareness of and for the importance of the subject matter. It is by far and away the single most practical book I have read on spiritual disciplines. The author doesn't simply talk in obscure mysterious concepts, she punctuates the manuscript with wonderful examples and creative ideas for actually DOING the disciplines, all in a way that make you want to put down the book and run to be with God.

The forward to the book is by Henri Nouwen, here is quote from his forward: "There are few books in which a solid biblical vision and a practical, hands-on approach are so well integrated. When you have read and lived this book, you have been in touch with the best that Christian spirituality has to offer."

I completely agree! If you are even slightly interested in pursuing Christian disciplines as a means of grace to life in Christ, this should be a must read. I give 5 Icons!
