Why do my front rims get so hot that I can't touch them after I stop my pickup truck?

I was coming to a stop in town and I could smell something burning like rubber. I pulled my truck over from the street and my front rims were a lot hotter than my back rims. Why is that and should I be concerned about it?

If those front wheels were really super hot, you've probably got dragging front brakes. Over time, and lack of regular maintenance, the slide rails of the calipers begin to seize and won't allow moving caliper to retract fully when you take your foot off the pedal.

When this occurs the pads will continue to drag on the rotors building up an enormous amount of heat, that's the heat you're feeling on the wheels.

Easy fix is to disassemble the calipers and lube the slide rails then reinstall the calipers. Once you get the procedure down it only takes about 20 minutes a wheel. Your local auto parts store will guide you in finding the correct lube called disc brake caliper grease. Its a very heavy grease that will keep those calipers moving the way they're supposed to. Should be done about every 20,000 mi.

You should be concerned because allowing this to continue is overheating the rotors as well as burning up the pads (that's the smell you mentioned).
